Nomination for positions on the band council epened on Monday, July 3, 2006 and closed on Friday, July 14, 2006.
Nominations were for the following positions for three years. The seven nomonations recieved are:
Candidates had to be on the band list of the Benoit First Nation and had to be at least 18 years of age and had to meet the criteria as laid out in our draft constitution election rules. Candidates were required to be full time residents of the island of Newfoundland.
Nomination forms were available online here, from the band office or from the Chief and/or Band Council.
Had there been more that one cadidate nominated for any position, An election would have taken place at the next annual assembly.
However, because only 1 cadidate was nominated for each position, no election was required for positions and the candidates were declared duly elected by acclamation at an election committee meeting of July 19, 2006.
Had there been any elctions required, they would have been held by secret ballot at the next annual assembly and held in accordancewith existing election practices of other first nation communities as laid out in our draft constitution.

All 7 nominations were received by 5:30 pm on Friday, July 14, 2006 and was opened by the elections committee on July 19, 2006. The names and positions of each candidate nominated are publicly posted for all band members to see.
All the candidates elected will be required to be sworn in at the Annual assembly at a swearing-in ceremony.
The election committee was made up of three band members at least 18 years of age and included an elder - Edna M. Benoit, woman - Donna Benoit, and youth - Cody Benoit. Persons nominated for a position on council could not sit on the election committee.
Note: Any vacancies that occur on council within the three year period will be filled by a bi-election for the remaining term. If, after one attempt to fill the position by bi-election, no candidates are elected, the band council will appoint someone to fill the position for the remaining term of office.
