The Black Cat

One time there was a man and a woman, they had a little boy whose name was Jack. The old man died and left his wife alone with their son. She used to go working in the woods everyday, while the little boy stayed at home. One day she gave him a bow and arrow. Then he also went in the woods, playing and hunting birds, when his mother was away working.

Jack had grown up and one day he was gone in the woods and got astray. He walked and walked and walked and walked until the night came. Then he saw a light, it was a big castle in the middle of the woods. He said to himself, « I wonder what is there ? » So he went and see. There were three giants playing cards. « I'm gonna make them fight tonight! » said Jack to himself. He fired an arrow and struck the oldest giant right under his ear. « Take care boy, if you strike me again you're gonna get a smack ! » said the giant to one of his brothers. And Jack fired another arrow and struck the giant in the same place again. So the giant jumped up and started to fight and fight and fight until he killed his brother. « Now ! » he said, « You are not going to be after me anymore ! And you, take care ! » he said to his other brother. After a while the little boy struck another arrow and hit the giant inside his ear. And, as it was expected, the giant said to his brother, « Ah, you are starting again ! » «I am not doing anything, we are only playing ! » « Well never mind, nobody else is here, there's only you, don't do it again ! » By and by, the little boy drew another arrow and hit the giant again. The giant got mad, he jumped onto the table and started to fight and fight and fight until he had killed his brother. « Now ! » he said « I am alone there's nobody left to pick at me ! » And he stayed sitting down there.

By and by the little boy said to himself «I've go to fire another one ! » he did it and struck the giant in the same place again. « Well! » said the giant, « That's funny, I am all alone, I killed my brothers and the same thing, appened again ! » He did not understand what was going on. Anyway Jack fired another arrow and the giant said, « Well, that's it, I'm sure there's somebody here and I am going to find out who it is ! » Jack had been hiding in a hole in the back of the house and the giant walked all around the house until he came across a bunch of hair. He pulled it out and said, « Oh, it's Jack, oh, I know now, it's you that caused me to kill my two brothers, well I wish I didn't know that! Anyway I am going to give you a chance, we are going to make a bargain ! I am going to light up twelve candles in a line and if you douse them all at once, well, you're the man I want! » The bargain sounded good to Jack. So the giant lit up twelve candles in a line and Jack douse them all at once. « All right! » said the giant, « you're the guy I need ! Now listen to me carefully ! Now the king has a castle down that road, and he has locked his daughter in a room on the last storey high so that nobody can see her ! » the giant said, « and there's also a big black cat that keeps the castle so that nobody can go around, and by the way, the nearer you get to him, the bigger he comes ! But he's got a big white spot on his chest and I think you're smart enough to shoot right in and kill him! »

So they took off and walked towards the castle. When they got to the bridge, the cat was there and the closer they walked to him, the bigger he came. Jack took his bow and arrow and struck the cat right in the white spot bang ! And down comes the cat. « 0. K.! » said the giant, « we're going to go home and we'll come back tomorrow ! » So they went home and they came back the next day. When they arrived at the castle the giant said to Jack, « you are going to dig a big hole, then you'll go inside and pull me through ! » So Jack made a hole, got in and started to pull the giant through. But he could only pull him as far as his shoulders. Jack looked above the entry of the hole and saw a sword, he grabbed it and cut the giant's head so that his body stayed right across the hole.

Anyway he went upstairs up to the last storey high, he opened the door and saw the king's daughter lying down on the bed sleeping. He got in bed with her, gave her his medicine and when he was finished he wrote a note that said, «If you find anything in nine months, I am to blame. » He told her his name before he left and slipped the note underneath the table cloth. There he found a handkerchief with her name, her mother's and father's names written on it, he took it, put it in his pocket and took off for home.

Nine months had passed and the king's daughter got pregnant. Nobody understood how come. The king said « There is only one way to find out, I am going to build a castle outside the road and on it I will put a board that says - lots to eat and drink, nothing to pay, a yarn to tell - »

Meanwhile Jack had grown up and one day he said to his mother « Mum ! It's a long time we haven't been in town, we should go today ! » So they took off and as they were walking they passed by a castle, Jack looked above the door and said « Mum ! That's the place where we should go ! Look what's written above the door ! - lots to eat and drink nothing to pay, a yarn to tell - well that's fine for us ! » So they walked in and were offered a good lunch. After they had eaten, Jack's mother said, « Now ! there's only a yarn to tell! » «I'll tell one ! » said Jack. His mother looked around and said, « What! What kind of yarn do you know ! You never went anywhere to know yarns ! » « Oh well! » said Jack, «I know a bit! » and he started to tell his yarn. « One day I had a bow and arrow and I was up in the woods chasing birds here and there until I got astray, so I walked for a while until I came to a big castle dwelled by three giants. I fired arrows at them and finally made one kill the two others. When he was left alone, I fired another one so that he went and looked for me, and he found me at last, I was hiding in the back of the house... » « You're crazy! » said Jack's mother, « nobody can believe that! » « Let him continue ! » said the queen, « he's doing good \ » and Jack went on, «... So the giant brought me to his place ; he lit twelve candles in a line for me to douse them at once, easy, and the next night he asked me to go to the king's castle... » Jack's mother was getting nervous, « Stop it Jack ! My gosh you're going to make us hang ! » « No ! » said the queen, « Leave him alone he's doing very good with it!» « But! » said Jack's mother, « Don't believe him, that's not true ! » and Jack went on, «... So one day we went to the king's castle and there was a big black cat on the bridge. The closer you walked to him, the bigger he was to come, and he had a big white spot on his chest and I struck right in the white spot. I killed him... » Jack's mother was to go up to him. She said, « That's a lie, that cannot be true, they are going to hang us, you're going to be found ! » « No ! » said the queen « Leave him alone, he's doing very good with the story ! » and Jack went on, «... The next night we went over to the castle again. We made a hole through the castle to get in. I went in the hole first and then pulled the giant in but he could only go as far as his shoulders so I chopped off his head and left his body there... » « That's lies ! » said Jack's mother. « No ! » said the queen, « Leave him alone ! » and Jack went on, «... I went upstairs and I found a beautiful lady, she was sleeping in bed, so I went in bed with her and then after I made a note and put it under the tablecloth. On the note I wrote that if anything happened to her in nine months, well, I was to blame ! » « Well! » she said, « that's you. I am your wife, I am the daughter who was in bed and I got a little boy! » she said. Jack's mother almost fainted with fright. « My gosh ! » she said, « you'll never pass all that! » « Yes ! » said Jack. Well the girl was so glad and she had such a pretty little boy ! They got married and if they're not dead, they're living yet.

The White Bear

One time there was a king and a queen. They had one daughter. One day the king got a crew and was to go sailing for six months. On the very day he was to sail out, he lost one of his men. There was a boy standing there. Crazy Jack was his name. He said to the king, « Well king ! I want to go with you ! » « No ! Not you ! » the king said « Well, you don't know what I can do » he said, «I can do a lot you know, king ! » said Crazy Jack. « Well all right then ! » said the king « But before, go in town and get a quarter of mutton and a gallon of rum, and don't be long, because at one o'clock I'm sailing out! » And Crazy Jack went to town. But on his way going he met some of his friends. They took him for a drink or two and got him drunk. By the time he came back with his mutton and rum the king had just sailed out. So Crazy Jack went back to his friends and opened his gallon of rum. Well! They had a good bash out of it, my dear ! Now, while the king was gone, the queen was chasing a young fellow, a prince who used to come down and see her every night. So one night, they were in the lounge, and Crazy Jack was there too. The prince invited the queen and her daughter to come to his castle tomorrow night, but he never asked Crazy Jack to join them. No ! He never asked him ! So the next evening he came down with his horse and carriage to take the queen and her daughter out to his castle. « You don't ask me to go ? » Crazy Jack said, « Well! » he says, « Where my mistress goes, I go too ; I'm supposed to, you know ! » and he jumped behind the carriage. Anyway, on their way going, they called to a restaurant, and Crazy Jack never went with them. He went in the next door bar where the girls were. He was playing with them and everything ! I guess you know what I am talking about. Suddenly, he noticed the prince, the queen and daughter were gone. My God ! He took his cap in his hand, cursed the girls and he took off. He jumped behind the carriage, well, just in time ! They travelled through the woods and arrived to a very big castle. A servant girl opened the door and when she saw them she said to herself, « Well, he brought them here to kill them ! » But she never told them that. So, they had supper. While they were eating, she slipped a note under Crazy Jack's plate. On the note it was written:

« You are in a highway robber's castle tonight. The prince brought you here to kill you but try your best to get in the room with the red door. I have hidden lots of guns and everything ; there you'll be all right»

Well, Crazy Jack read the note and passed it to the queen. The queen was all in with fright. She could not eat anymore, she would not pass it to her daughter though. At nine o'clock, the prince said, « All hands to bed ! Jack you go to sleep in that room ! » « No ! » said Jack, « I must go in the same room as my mistress. I always did when the king was gone. I'm supposed to do that! » So the three of them went in the room with the red door. When they got in there. Jack locked the door and said, « We're all right now, we got lots of powder and guns there ! » So he loaded up twenty-six guns and lined them. « Well! Right! Now we can set them all together ! » he said. He was foolish but there he wasn't foolish ! The queen and her daughter were going crazy with fright. He said, «If you make noise, they are going to rush in here and we're gonna be all killed ! Don't make noise ! » By and by, they heard noise coming upstairs, knocks on the door, « Can I come in ? » « No ! » Jack said, and the prince answered « Well I paid for a room for my night and it's mine ! » The ladies were to open the door but Jack said « Wait! » The prince had gone downstairs to get the rest, so Jack counted them coming upstairs, twenty-five of them. So, they took the guns Jack had twenty-five and the queen had one for her own, too, in case some might escape ! When the robbers came by the door, the prince knocked again and Jack asked, « How many of you are there ? » « Twenty-five ! » « 0. K. I am going to let you in ! » Jack said, and he pulled on the trigger. He cleaned them, boy ! And the queen killed one too! They were all killed. So, Crazy Jack, the queen and her daughter went downstairs and said goodbye to the servant girl, and they went back to town. The queen had written down all what happened, and when they got back, she married Crazy Jack to her daughter.

By and by, six months had passed and the king was sailing in. So they went to the boat, the queen's daughter on Crazy Jack's knees ! When the king saw that - his own daughter on Crazy Jack's knees - he was tearing his hair, he was going crazy ! He said, « Take Jack from there and whack him in jail right off there ! » The queen would not say a thing, at least not before the king had calmed down, and it took a while before he calmed down, let me tell you !

So by and by, when he calmed down a bit, he looked at the note and said « That's impossible ! That never happened ! » « Yes ! » said the queen, « Yes it happened, and if only for Jack we'd be all killed! » So the king told his men, « Go in jail and get that Jack out! Don't you hurt a hair of his head! » he said. « We're going to go all in, and we're going to marry them all round and have the wedding for all of us ! » So if they're not dead, they're living yet!

Couvrette

One time there was a man and a woman who had seven sons. Their sons all left home to go to work. One day while they had been away for a long time, their mother got pregnant, and she told them, « If it's a girl you're going to find a rose on your window, and if it's a boy you'll find a match ! » That's what she told them before they left.

A long time had passed and one morning she gave birth to a little girl. The boys found a rose on their window, they were very glad to know they had had a sister. By and by the time passed and the baby had grown to a teenager and she used to see a lot of people passing by on Sundays. Once she asked her mother, « Mum ! Where are all these people going ? » « Well my dear, they're going to mass ! » answered the mother. « Oh ! » said the girl, « Can I go ? » « No ! you're not going ! » answered the mother. « I promise you, I'll go straight in the church and I'll come back right home ! » said the girl. Her mother agreed on it and the next Sunday the girl went to mass. On her way back, she passed by three old women who were sitting on a bench, and when they saw her, one of them said « That's the girl, who has seven brothers gone seven years ago ! I wish I had her brothers ! » she said to herself.

Anyway, the girl went back home and never told anything to her mother. A week passed and the next Sunday she saw the people pass again. «Mother ? » she asked, «Can I go to mass again today ? » « Well ! » said the mother, « if you're a good girl like last Sunday, yes you can go ! » The mother didn't know what had happened, but the girl wanted to know the truth about the three old women. So the next Sunday, she went again, she went straight in the church, and after mass when she was coming back home, she saw the three old ladies sitting on the same bench and when she passed by them one of the old ladies said. « Well that girl looks like the seven brothers that's gone seven years ago ! » Well the girl had heard that and when she came home she said to herself, « I got them and I'm going to find them! » and when she saw her mum, «I've got seven brothers ! » « Who told you that ? » asked the mother. « Well! on my way home I saw three old ladies sitting on a bench and they were saying I looked like the seven brothers that's gone seven years ago and mum ! » she said, « I got to find them ! » The girl was only in her teens and her mother found it bad to see her daughter go.

Anyway the next morning, she took a pack of lunch, she called her little dog, « Couvrette ! » and off she went. She travelled and travelled and travelled through the forest and by and by she saw a great big house. She looked above the door and there was a board on which was written « Seven Brothers That's Gone Seven Years Ago. » «Well! that's my brothers ! » she said to herself She walked in, they were all gone hunting until the evening. So she cleaned up all the house, she made the beds, she washed the dishes, she put on some meat and potatoes and cabbage for their dinner. When everything was ready, she dressed the table and went to the window. When she saw them coming, she put everything on the table and she took a plateful for her and her dog and she went to hide in the cellar. When they came they said, « My God! What is that! That's seven years right there that nothing as such has happened in our house ! There's something in here ! » And the oldest one, his name was Tom, said « Well! I'm going to stay in tomorrow morning and I'll see who is doing the work! » So the next morning, Tom stayed at home and the others went to work. Anyway he had a newspaper. He took it, went to lay down and fell asleep. When she heard him snoring, the girl got up, made the other beds, washed the dishes, swept the floor, and cooked the dinner again. When everything was ready, she raised the table, put everything on and when she saw then coming, she took a plateful for her and her dog and went hiding in the cellar. Anyway when they came into the house Tom had just woken up. His brothers asked him « Tom ? have you found out ? » « No ! » he said, «I fell asleep ! » He didn't see a thing and everything was done again. So Bill said, «I am going to stay tomorrow morning and believe me I won't fall asleep ! » So the next morning Tom and Jack went in the woods. The others were too young to be spoken of Bill stayed at home. He was going around a long time not to fall asleep. By and by, he took a newspaper and wen to lay down. After a while he fell asleep. When the girl heard him snoring, she got up, made the other beds, swept the floor, washed the dishes and put dinner on. When everything was ready, she raised the table, put everything on it and when she saw them coming, she took one plateful for her and her dog and went hiding in the cellar. When they came in Bill was just getting up. He didn't see anything. So Jack said, « Well, Up to now none of you has been able to find out, you're no good, tomorrow morning I'm going to stay in and I'll find out! I don't know what's wrong with you ! » So anyway the night passed and the next morning Bill and Tom went in the woods, and Jack stayed in. So he took a newspaper, went to lay down and soon he started to snore. So the girl got up, made the other beds, swept the floor and washed the dishes. But she didn't know that Jack was watching her. She put on dinner and raised the table. When everything was all set up, she went to the window and when she saw them coming she was just going to go in the cellar. But Jack stopped her, he was so glad to see his sister, « Now ! » he said, « Go and hide, I'm going to make them guess who I caught! » So she went in the cellar and when they came they asked him, « Have you found who it was ? » « Sure ! » he said, « I found out! » « Do you know then ? » « Well! » Jack said, « You guess ! » And they guessed everything but in vain. « That's our sister ! » Jack said and as she was coming out of the cellar he said, « and here she is ! » They almost killed her with gladness. « Well, we're going to have somebody in the house to cook for us when we're gone ! » Jack said. « Do you think you'll be frightened to stay alone ? » he asked. «No ! » she said, «I'm not frightened alone ! »

Anyway the next day they went in the woods and she stayed in. She had done all her work and was having her dinner with her dog. By and by who came in ! An old witch! « Good day, my dear ! » she said, « Good day, grandmother ! » said the girl, «I thought I would be alone today but I have company! » And they had the best kind of chat and everything. The day passed off like that. When the old witch knew the boys were coming back, she said, «Well I am going to go home now, I guess they're coming ! » and she took off for home. Now when the boys came back, they had supper and everything was nice. « Anybody came here today ? » asked Jack to his sister. « Well yes ! » said the girl, « an old woman came here. What a nice old woman, I like her, she stayed with me half the day ! » « Take care of yourself! » said Jack. « All right! » she said.

So anyway the next morning they went in the woods again, and she stayed in. When she had done all her work in the house, she was having dinner with her dog and the old witch came again! « Good day, my dear! » « Good day, grandmother ! » said the girl, « Come in and sit down ! » And thus they chatted all day long until dinner time. Then the old woman said, « Well, I am going now, I guess they are coming ! » And she took off. When the boys came back, they had a good supper, they ate all that was in the pot. After supper Jack asked, « Anybody came here today ? » « Well! » she said, « Yes ! the same old woman, a nice little woman, I had a big chat with her today, the day passed so quickly ! » she said. « That's nice ! » he said. The next day they went in the woods again and the girl stayed in. At the same time as the day before, the same old witch came again. They had dinner together and after dinner the woman asked, « Can I look in your hair ? » « Oh me ! said the girl, «I got no lice ! » « Oh, let me look in your head ! » asked the witch, and she found three lice, and you know what she did ! She turned the three brothers into three sheep. Anyway she went home.

By and by three sheep were coming, growling and mowling. They were starving to death. « My gosh! » said the girl «I've got nothing for you to eat, I haven't got enough ! » So she took the three sheep and went to look for a place where they could eat. And soon she found a nice Held full of hay. She put down the fence and let her sheep in. By and by a young prince passed by and he said, « You know you cannot put your sheep in here ! » « Well! » she said, « my sheep are my brothers and I would like to have some hay for them, they're starving to death ! » « 0. K. then! » and she went back with the prince to his castle. And soon they got married. But before they got married she made him promise never to kill none of her sheep.

By and by, one day she had a little boy and while her husband was in the woods she went to get buckets of water. So she went to the well and there she met the old witch with her daughter. The witch's daughter looked much like the girl but she was dark. The witch and her daughter dipped the girl in the well, but they couldn't drown her, she hung on a chain. And the witch's daughter took the place of the girl and went back to the prince's castle. A long time after that, she asked the prince, « I want you to kill a sheep ! » « Oh ? » he said, « you made me promise not to ! You said they would die old age ! » « Yes ! » she said, « but I like my mutton ! » she said. So he killed one and the dog buried all the bones behind the porch. So she made him kill the three sheep like that and the dog buried all the bones. By and by a long time had come to pass and one day the boy heard racket coming, a racket of chains. It was her, she called the dog, « Couvrette, Couvrette ! » « Yes ! » said the dog, «I'm here to your service; what do you want mistress ?» «What about my three brothers ? » she asked, « Well they're all killed and I got all their bones buried behind the porch ! » said the dog. « Well! » she said, « Tell the prince that if he wants to have me again he's got to have an axe that cuts butter, iron and wood ! » and she went back to the well.

But the little boy had heard that and he said to himself « That's funny, there's something in that I've got to tell to the prince ! » So the next morning, they went in the woods, the two of them. « Prince! » said the boy, « That's two nights that something came to your door and that looks like a woman and she called her little dog, « Couvrette, Couvrette ! » and the dog dashed into her and said, « I'm here to your service ; what do you want mistress ? » and she told him that if you want to get her again you've got to have an axe that cut butter, iron and wood ! » The prince said to himself, «That's my wife! » He never noticed the witch's daughter. Now he said to the boy, « Tonight we're going downtown ! » And they went to town and they got axes that cut butter, iron and wood, and the same night he got two guards each side of the door and he told them, « When you'll hear - cut butter, iron and wood - well! cut! » Anyway, everybody was ready before twelve o'clock, there was a guard on each side of the door with each an axe. Suddenly they heard she was coming, they were all frightened and she said, « Couvrette, Couvrette ! » and the little dog said, « Yes, I'm to your service; what do you want mistress ? » « Where are my brothers ? » she asked, « Well, they are killed and eaten and I've got all the bones buried behind the porch ! » « Well! » she said, « Tell the prince that if he wants to see me again he's got to have an axe that cuts butter, iron an wood ! » Crack! they cut and there she was disenchanted, she was free. The prince went upstairs in the room and he tied the old witch and her daughter together and burnt them all. So if they're not dead, they're living yet.
