Application requirements and information:

  1. New members are welcomed to apply (but please read our requirements below first).
  2. Download and print our application form in doc or HTML and pedigree chart.
  3. Please fill in all sections applicable.
  4. You must meet our criteria requirements. You must show an historic connection to a Mi'kmaq community of the St. George's Bay area of Newfoundland prior to 1949. You must have a current connection to a Newfoundland Mi'kmaq Community.
  5. Membership is only open to Mi'kmaq with a connection to our family and community.
  6. You must self identify as a mi'kmaw person. Those who do not, need not apply.
  7. When transferring from another band you must attach a copy of your resignation letter that is to be sent to your old band asking your name be removed from their band list and asking the return of any documentation you submitted to them. (You cannot remain a member of another band)
  8. You will need to attach an ancestry report and pedigree chart showing a solid connection to your Mi'kmaq ancestor.
  9. You will also need to prove your connection to your aboriginal ancestor through long form birth, (showing parents names) baptism, marriage, colonial and archival documents that you must attach to your application. Long Form (showing parents names) PROVINCIAL birth certificates for yourself (and children if applicable) are required. (Please send copies and keep the originals in your possession.). Our membership criteria is the same as required by the Qalipu Provincial band. (Click here for Newfoundland birth certificate Applications) Be sure that the province properly records your mother maiden name - if not have them correct it. (Get any other errors fixed as well)
  10. We would appreciate it when providing documentation that you please refraine from using nicknames- we need the actual legal names of individuals. Nicknames can cause confusion.

  12. BFN applications must be approved by our Band Council and upon acceptance successful applicants will be added to our tribal Register and receive an acceptance letter and band card. Please attach or email photos for the band cards. (membership disclaimer)
  13. An application donation ($25.00) for our band is required and very much appreciated and you must enclose a self-addressed-stamped-envelope. Monies will be used for administration, other band activities and is non-refundable.
  14. Members are responsible for updating their email, mailing address and telephone numbers with the band, when such changes occur.
  15. Some of you may want to contact a genealogist for help in preparation of your supporting documentation to be attached to your application.
  16. Please contact us if you require further clarification. We look forward to receiving your application. It can take up to six weeks to process your application if everything is in order and your application will be returned if incomplete.
  17. Applications receieved are protected and as such the personal information will be kept confidential.

Benoit First Nation maintains 2 tribal registers, 1 for those in the (Basic lists here) community and 1 for those that are currently residing outside the province. Please notify our office when you return to Taqamkuk so we can return your name to our community list.
