Come and celebrate National Aboriginal Day with the Mi’kmaq.
June 21, 2007 is an annnual celebration for the Penwa' Mawi-Amskwesewey L’nue’kati or Benoit First Nation - a Mi’kmaq Community located on the Southwest cost of the Port au Port Peninsula.
Penwa' Mawi-Amskwesewey L'nue'kati is pronounced Ben-wah um-skoo wess-so-whey ul-noo-eh-gut-dee.
In conjuction with our sister bands, this is a time we celebrated with pride our heritage and to shared with others our traditions. All are welcomed.
At 6:30 am at the beach in De Grau a Sunrise ceremony with lighting of the sacred fire will take place (weather permitting).

People are asked to be mindful and respectful of Mi’kmaq traditions and culture. Those present are told to ask the leadership for guidance.

Elders who visit are to each be given a tobacco tie by the youth coordinator. It is traditional of the Mi’kmaq that tobacco be offered before asking elders to speak. Tobacco ties are a sign of the great respect that we hold for our Mi'kmaq Elders.
At 9:00 am at the Town square in Degrau the raising of the Benoit First Nation and Mi’kmaq Grand council Flags and smudging with sweetgrass and sage with prayers to the creator.
At 9:15 am Tradional breakfast at the French Centre. This is looked after by the Benoit Clan Women's Director Phyllis Young and her committee.

At 9:30 am a cultural display of crafts and artifacts at the French Centre and continues until 3:00 pm. This is hosted by Vice-Chief Peter Benoit and Bernice Benoit.
Traditional music and karaoke to be played.
The general public as well as hildren from the local schools are invited to visit.

At 1:00 pm a traditional feast of fry bread and stew (chicken may be substituted for moose) will be the highlight of the feast.
At 1:30 pm we cut the National Aboriginal Day Cake and everyone has desert- the cake will be delicious.

At 2:00 pm a ticket will be drawn on $50.00 worth of live lobster.
At 2:30 pm a give-away ceremony will take place.
At 3:00 pm Activities finish up and organizers help clean up.
At 9:30 pm A sunset ceremony at the beach in De Grau with the extingishing of the sacred fire (weather permitting).
This is our annual celebration where we celebrate the summer solstice and share our culture and heritage with pride. We must constantly bring awareness to the Mi’kmaq presence -especially to the children and youth.
