St George's Bay Mi'kmaq

Father to all the Tourouts

Auguste Tourout

Augustin Tourout, is know as the father to all the Tourouts of Newfoundland. He married a local Mi'kmaq girl in St. George's, and started a long and interesting family tree that we will look at in closer detail in this presentation.

The Sandy Point R. C. Marriage records, available in the Provincial Archives in St. John's, Newfoundland and at St. Joseph's R.C. Church in St. George's, Newfoundland list an August Tauro, born in La Manche, France age 43, marrying at Sandy Point to Mary Ann Sheppard, age 34 of St. Georges, Newfoundland.

Surname discrepancies

It seems, as with many other surnames, there were spelling irregularities with the Tourout name also. Starting with Tauro, as it is originally written in the church register from Sandy Point. A second entry of the name appears next to the original one and is spelt Tourneau. This spelling changes again when we look at census records and baptism records for August's children.
